Up-tempo pop is a catchy and popular genre of music that is typically characterized by quick and steady tempos, catchy melodies, and relatable lyrics. Pop ballads combine elements of pop music with a slower tempo and often emotional lyrics. Focussing on themes of love, heartbreak, and personal experiences, pop ballads typically build to a powerful and emotional climax.
A Broadway song is a song that is specifically written and performed as part of a stage or screen musical. It serves as a way to advance the plot, develop characters, or express emotions within the context of the story being told. Broadway selections can range from upbeat and energetic numbers to emotional and introspective ballads. Judging is based 50% on vocals and 50% on presentation.
A country song typically features storytelling lyrics that revolve around themes such as love, heartbreak, rural life, and home. Country music has evolved over time, with different subgenres like traditional country, pop country, and country rock. Country music has a strong emotional connection and resonates deeply with its heartfelt lyrics and relatable stories.
Learning songs in other languages helps to explore different cultures and broaden your musical horizons. Singing in another language exposes you to new melodies, rhythms, and vocal techniques that may not be as prevalent in your native language. Compete with any song in a language besides English. Songs must be 80% in the second language.
A duet is a collaboration where the singers share the piece, often harmonizing, creating a unique and powerful dynamic. Duets should showcase the chemistry between the singers, adding depth to the overall sound and presentation. Pop duets will be separated from Musical Theatre selections. You can compete in either or both categories.
A rookie or “novice” competitor is someone who is just starting out in their singing journey, and may not have much experience performing on stage or in front of an audience. You may be learning and honing your skills, but if you have the passion and determination to showcase your talent and improve along the way, Captial Crown Talent is the place for you!
Taylor Swift is the most decorated singer songwriter of her generation. We can't wait to hear your favourite Taylor songs from any album and any ERA! It's a love story, baby just say yes!
An explanation of each category is listed above. Age division is based on your date of birth as of Jan 1st, 2024. Duets are categorized by the average age of both competitors. You may compete in your own age category as well as one category above. (ie: If you are competing in age 11-13, you can also compete in the same category in the age 14-15 division.) You may compete in either or both the Up-tempo or Ballad pop vocal categories. You may also choose to compete in either or both Pop Duo or Musical Theatre Duo categories. See registration form for age and category divisions.
All solo entries must be between 1:00-2:30 minutes long, with duets running at 3:15 minutes. Entries that run over will receive a deduction. If editing is not your thing, not to worry, our skilled crew at Capital Crown Talent can edit your track for you for an additional serivice fee. No self-accompaniment, please. Capital Crown Talent will make the final decision as to where a song is placed category wise, based on song genre. Please adjust any lyrics that may not be appropriate to a family audience. All performers will sing with a corded hand-held microphone. All tracks must be emailed in mp3 format with the competitor's name, category and song title to capitalcrowntalent@gmail.com no later than April 7th, 2024 by noon. Schools with multiple tracks can use Dropbox to send all of their tracks at once, labelled with the name, category and song title of each track in the folder.
Costuming should be representational of the piece you are performing. Props are allowed only in the Broadway Solo and Musical Theatre Duet categories. Whether your piece is a rockin' fast song, or a moving ballad, think of the overall presentation, and how you want to execute the number from both an emotional and physical standpoint. Perform with passion, eave it all on stage, and most of all, have fun!
Any performer may compete in Capital Crown Talent! You do not need to be part of a music school, or be taking formal lessons to participate, nor does your music school need to participate for you to compete. 2-3 adjudicators will be on-hand in each category. Award placements will based on the total marks for each participant in each category. Adjudication critique sheets will be made available after the event. Capital Crown Talent reserves the right to combine categories to the nearest age group. All awards will be handed out at the Trophy Ceremony at the end of the day. Time of awards will be posted April 7th, 2024.
